Im Sitting Here with No Power to the Rack

We had a big storm come through overnight and I thought it expedient to turn off the power to the rack.  I also turned off power to the desk, but I have that back on now.  I am realizing that There are a number of things that I am doing that do not require the activity of having the rack equipment on all the time.  So I am wondering what things I can do if I have the rack equipment turned off.

Now that I have turned the rack power back on, I note that my laptop was running on wifi and not a connection to my HomeLab. That is not a problem until I do HomeLab configuration or maintenance items that require me to be inside of certain vlans.  I cant get inside those vlans without the router in the rack being powered up and my laptop connected via the server vlan. There are a number of rules that allow me to do this. I also notice that my monitor group is not active unless they are powered on.  Right now I have a managed switch on the ledge outside of the rack and the table that allow multiple connections from the living room, table, and rack.  I think I might modify the network:

  • place an Edgerouter-X on the ledge
    • connect a double WAN to the Server vlan and to the FLINT2 vlan
    • the third connection would be to the laptop Ethernet port
    • the remaining 2 ports could connect to the management vlan and the laptop vlan
    • I might have to set up the server vlan port to also use the management vlan and others; haven't decided yet
  • start working up an Edgerouter-12p to take the place of the ER-X and the switch on the ledge; haven't decided yet on how to set it up
    • It should have the function of the ER-X
    • It should provide some of the function of the managed switch
    • Could this replace the Edgerouter-12 that is in the rack itself? In other words, do I need the router to be in the rack?
    • I do have the server in the rack and could set some of the LXC containers to be routers in and of themselves, so that would work.
I am not sure of the changes that will make it better.  I need to really discover what I need on a daily basis.  I do want to be able to add some other projects that have been lying dormant.
